Sigurjon & Elizabeth came from Iceland to Nova Scotia, to Gimli, Canada (near Winnepeg) in 1880. They were traveling with 23 other families who were led by three men who also were from Iceland. The men were Bjorn Josua, Magnus Stephenson and Rev. Paul Thorlakson. These men led the 23 families from Gimli (called New Iceland) down into the States along the Red River until they came to the Gardar, Mountain and Hallston, N.D. area. Here they disagreed. The first two wanted to settle there and with many families did so. The Rev. Paul Thorlakson decided to further explore the Red River Valley into Minnesota. The Sigurjon Swanson family was among those who went on to the area around Minneota, Lynd, and Marshall, Minnesota. This is where many of the 1st and 2nd generations of Swanson's homesteaded.

Sigurjon & Elizabeth were millers, grinding the grain into meal. They also homesteaded & farmed.

I just received an e-mail from a posting query from a lady in Vancouver BC named Gerri McDonald at gem@axionet.com who said that she found in a book called "Vesturfaraskra" pg 24, which is a compilation of all of the records of Icelanders who emigrated between 1870 and 1914. It shows the following: Emigrating from Arnorstaoir in Jokuldals-and Hlioarhreppur in 1875.

Sigurjon Svanlaugsson- worker-age 32 and went to Hallston, Mountain, Gardar, North Dakota.

She taught school in Gardar, N.D. On our trip to Gardar in September 1998, we found a picture of Thorbjorg "Bogga" Swanson in the Islandic State Museum at Cavalier, North Dakota.

Aged 98 years at death. Services Tuesday, October 21,1975 at 2:30 P.M. at the Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, Sacramento, Ca.

Interment at Gardar Cemetery, Gardar, North Dakota. There was no obituary found at the Cavalier Chronicle in Cavalier, N.D.

She was survived by many nieces and nephews. Those locally are Kenneth Mongeau, Duane Dupont, Roger Swanson, Richard Swanson all of Sacramento, Ca. & Lyle Thorsteinson of Galt.

Magnus Thorsteinson was born in Iceland, January 25, 1842. In 1878 he came with his family to the U.S., staying for a year with his brother, T. H. Thorsteinson, northeast of Minneota, at Vallers Twp, Lyon County, Minnesota. In 1879 he homesteaded in section 24, Lake Stay township, Lincoln County, Minnesota, and there endured the hardships of the early pioneer life.

Magnus Thorsteinson was twice married. His only surviving child by his first wife is Erik M. Thorsteinson of Sacramento, California. In the early 1870's he married again to Miss Vilhelmina Goodmundson of Iceland. Eight children were born to them, five of whom are still living: Groa, John and Thora reside on the old homestead near Arco; Lillie is married to Adolph Johnson, mail carrier of Arco; and Christine, married to B. P. Johnson, mail carrier of Lake Benton.

Eric Thorsteinson, the oldest son, was born in Iceland and came with his father to Minnesota when only seven years old. To him fell the burden of helping with the farm work, herding cattle and sheep, and when he grew older, helping break up the land. This was a slow, tedious job as the work was done by oxen and much of it done in partnership with a neighbor. As years passed, the fields became larger and the family moved from the old sod shanty that had served as a home for several years, to a frame house which the father of the family bought and had moved to the site where the present house on the home place now stands.

Erik Thorsteinsons' family witnessed the fierce blizzards of 1880 and 1881. The storms would last for days without any intermission and it was very dangerous to go from the house to the sheds to do chores. Many times the stock had to be satisfied with eating snow for water for it was impossible to get from the house to the barn. In those early days, the barns were made of posts and trees covered with coarse slough hay and straw.

The fuel of the pioneers was twisted coarse slough hay. In the evenings after the day's work was finished it was the task of each member of the family, young and old, to help twist hay to provide fuel for the following day. The family would take turns putting the twisted hay into the stove which served as a cook stove, parlor heater, and furnace all in combination.

This is from a book entitled "An Illustrated History of Lyon County, Minnesota", by Arthur P. Rose. The book was published by "Northern History Publishing Company" in 1912.

"Biographical History"

Archie S. Mongeau (1887) is the manager and grain buyer for the Northwestern Elevator Company at Marshall. He was born in Kankakee County, Illinois, January 11, 1885. His parents are Atler and Agnes (Smith) Mongeau, the former a native of Canada and the latter of Illinois. They came to Lyon County in 1887 and located in Fairview township. The mother died in 1897. They were the parents of eight children, as follows: Josephine (Mrs M.D.Devereant), of Illinois; Leah (Mrs. N.J.Robinson), of Tracy; Archie S., of this sketch; Edmond, a fireman on the Northwestern railroad at Huron, South Dakota; Napoleon, a student of the Tracy High School; Oscar, a student at Kakakee, Illinois; Emma and Ziphere.

When two years of age our subject accompanied his parents to Lyon County and located in Fairview Township. There he grew to manhood and obtained his education in the district schools and in the Marshall High School. He then worked on his father's farm until March 15, 1910. On the latter date he entered the employ of the Northwestern Elevator Company at Marshall as manager and grain buyer. He has held this position since that date.

The elevator was built by the Northwestern Elevator Company about fifteen years ago. The company buys and ships grain and handles coal and seed. The home office is at Minneapolis and C.A.Magnuson is president. The company owns 105 elevators on the Great Northern Railroad, with a storage capacity of 5,500,000 bushels.
